While the circumstances described may be unfair, they are typically not illegal. In Ontario, employers are generally not prohibited by law from requiring employees to be on-call or from cancelling shifts on short notice without compensation, provided the employees are not obliged to remain at the workplace during this time.
Many workers rely on tips to supplement their wages, particularly given today’s inflationary pressures and the high cost of living. In Ontario, the Employment Standards Act provides certain protections for workers who receive tips.
I believe I am being underpaid. What can I do? Unless stipulated by your employment agreement, there is no legal obligation for your employer to provide salary increases or promotions regardless of the work performed.
